REVIEW OF THE JOURNALISTIC PODCAST
Kelsey Munro’s half-hour podcast invited Lowy Institute Research Fellow Ben Bland and Hong Kong-based Financial Times journalist Primrose Riordan to talk about the roots of the ongoing political unrest in the city and where it might end. Hong Kong, which is semi-autonomous now is being squeezed by an increasingly authoritarian Beijing government and its appointed leadership in Hong Kong, putting pressure on its autonomy and rule of law. Following a furious public reaction to a proposed extradition bill which would have exposed Hong Kongers to the mainland justice system, the city has been convulsed by mass protests, including violent clashes between police and demonstrators.
In the podcast, Kelsey was exploring the question of whether Beijing will step into the protest in Hong Kong together with Ben and Primrose. As the peaceful Umbrella movement of 2014 ended without concession from the government, its leaders barred from political office and jailed.
With some professional analyze from Ben and Primrose, I think it can help to let global know the real situation in Hong Kong except news. The opening of the podcast included some sound recordings of protest can catch the attention of audience. “Yes again, year gas in the street of Hong Kong”, I think you may think of something when hearing this.
